Welcome to the University of Arizona Department of Anesthesiology. Our department is comprised of 32 clinical faculty, 7 research faculty, 41 residents, 2 fellows and 15 CRNA’s covering 35 operating rooms at three facilities; BUMC-T, BUMC-S, and Southern Arizona Veteran’s Administration Hospital. We provide an exceptional educational and training program aimed at preparing physicians to become experts in healthcare upon completion of their residency/fellowship.
The clinical experience includes ambulatory, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric/gynecology, pediatric, vascular, trauma and transplant surgery, as well as acute and chronic pain and critical care.
In addition to clinical teaching, educational opportunities include: anesthesia simulator training; daily didactic lectures; journal clubs; and Wednesday morning grand rounds. Our residents have an outstanding record in passing the ABA written and oral examinations. They are also in high demand for clinical and academic positions upon completion of their residency. Our network of graduates spans hospitals across the country, especially the western states.
Our research programs are supported by the NIH and private industry sources and include: coagulation medicine; acute and chronic pain; anesthetic mechanisms; clinical monitoring and engineering; critical care medicine, the nature of consciousness; treatment of traumatic brain injury and end-of-life brain activity; critical care medicine; and obstetrical anesthesia. These endeavors have produced peer-reviewed, national and international meeting presentations, and visiting professorships.
In conclusion, we are committed to providing excellent resident education and training in a collegial academic environment. I would like to invite those interested in joining our residency or fellowships to consider the opportunities offered at the University of Arizona.
