Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona COM in Tucson and Banner-University Medical Center (BUMC).
It is my privilege and honor to be the Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson.
Banner-University Medical Center (BUMC) is the major tertiary care medical center serving central and southern Arizona and is home to southern Arizona's only Level 1 trauma center, where approximately 5000 trauma patients are treated annually. Diamond Children's Hospital and the Arizona Cancer Center are both major healthcare destinations for patients in the western United States. The Department of Anesthesiology provides coverage for Banner-University Medical Center Tucson, Banner-University Medical Center South, Banner Diamond Children's Hospital, and Southern Arizona VA Health Care System; totaling approximately 25,000 anesthetics per year. BUMC is a major center for cardio-thoracic surgery, complex orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, solid organ transplant, and is a leading center for lung transplantation. Critical care anesthesiologists staff the cardio-thoracic ICU, surgical ICU, and neuro ICU. Our pain physicians treat a wide array of complex pain syndromes both in the clinic and in the operating room. As a result of this broad clinical service line, our residents and fellows receive outstanding training in all areas of anesthesiology and ultimately secure top fellowships or employment offers from the most coveted practices and academic institutions.
We eagerly await the opening in early 2019 of our new state of the art 650,000 square feet, 9-story hospital tower that will house new operating rooms, ICU’s, obstetrical suite as well as other patient care facilities.
The Department of Anesthesiology enjoys close ties with the Departments of Medicine, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Psychology for ongoing research programs in areas of pulmonary biology, pain medicine, mechanisms of anesthesia, coagulation and vascular biology. The University of Arizona ranks 30th in NIH funding and thus provides robust opportunities in biomedical research.
Please take the time to learn more about us, our residency and fellowship programs, and our clinical services. Contact us with questions that you may have.
