The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona Medical Center provides a full range of clinical service and education including Anesthesiology Residency and Fellowships. Clinical experience covers ambulatory, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, trauma, transplantation and vascular surgery, as well as acute and chronic pain and critical care. Our 47 clinical faculty, 41 residents and 17 nurse anesthetists cover 35 operating rooms at UAMC, UAMC-South Campus Hospital, UAMC Outpatient Surgery Center, and Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Hospital. A new surgery facility with 30 additional operating rooms is being constructed at UAMC.
In addition to clinical anesthesiology experience and teaching in the surgical operating rooms, educational opportunities include anesthesia simulator training and didactic teaching including daily lectures from 0630 to 0700, weekly Grand Rounds on Wednesdays from 0630 to 0830, as well as journal clubs and special guest lectures. Our residents have an outstanding track record in passing Written and Oral Board Exams, and are in high demand for top jobs in private practice and academia. Our network of graduates spans hospitals across the country, especially the west, and we enjoy departmental socializing and athletic events.
Our research programs are supported by the NIH and numerous private industry sources and cover coagulation medicine, clinical monitoring and engineering, anesthetic mechanisms, critical care medicine, end-of-life brain activity, the nature of consciousness, treatment for traumatic brain injury, obstetrical anesthesia and other areas producing peer-reviewed papers, national and international meeting presentations, and visiting professorships.
