Educational Opportunities - Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona offers a large and extensive educational program for our residents, medical students and fellows. This year we welcomed 41 residents to our residency program and established a fellowship in Critical Care medicine, the first in the state of Arizona. The high standards of teaching and training combined with the location and lifestyle offered make us an excellent choice for your training and research in the field of Anesthesiology - with subspecialty training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Neuroanesthesia, Chronic Pain Management, Obstetrical Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Trauma, Post Anesthesia Care, Transplantation, Intensive Care, and Ambulatory Anesthesia. 

Our faculty, fellows, residents and medical students are involved in a wide range of research activities within the department of Anesthesiology. Major areas of research include inhalation anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, central mechanisms of anesthesia, resuscitation, cardiopulmonary monitoring, and pain management. The department currently employs 47 full-time faculty. two full-time research personnel with several years of experience conducting clinical studies and wet lab research. Residents, medical students and fellows are involved in a wide range of research activities within the Department of Anesthesiology.

The Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC) which comprises all of the facilities of the UA College of Medicine, the Banner University Medical Center (BUMC) Hospital, the Arizona Cancer Center, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, and numerous research facilities is home to the Department of Anesthesiology. The combining of medical and research facilities offers a strong resourse and expanded opportunities for collaboration between the clinical and basic sciences departments.  At BUMC, our department administers over 15,000 anesthetics per year in 19 state-of-the-art operating rooms and 2 obstetrical suites. 

The UA Department of Anesthesiology performs clinical care, teaching, and research at five facilities:

  • The Banner University Medical Center - Tucson Campus  A 480-bed tertiary care hospital, Level-1 Trauma Center and Regional Transplant Center for Southern Arizona - the primary teaching hospital for the College of Medicine 
  • The Banner University Medical Center- South Campus  The secondary teaching hospital
  • Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Health Care System (SAVAHCS) A 285-bed hospital provides training, primary care and sub-specialty health care in numerous medical areas
  • The Banner University Medical Center -  La Cholla Physician Offices - Northwest Office
